What We Do

Business & Human Rights Monitoring

Business & Human Rights Monitoring Program is a comprehensive initiative aimed at safeguarding business and human rights by ensuring state duty to protect, corporate responsibility to respect, and access to remedy for the victims of human rights violations.

The ultimate goal is to contribute to the realization of a responsive and accountable business sector in which the rights of community members including informal sector actors are effectively protected, respected, and remedied once violated or abused.

With a committed and well-trained team on business and human rights, we systematically monitor, gather, assess, and respond to violations using contemporary approaches. Currently, we have designed the Human Rights digital Information Hub as an effort and efficient digital system to enable the community and general public to lodge complaints relating to business and human rights.

Data collected through this program serves as valuable resources that inform and strengthen our advocacy initiative and contribute to the content of various organization publications. The data from the reports enabled us to effectively advocate for policy and legal reforms, corporate accountability on human rights issues and promote awareness to the affected community members and relevant stakeholders on issues related to Business and Human Rights including the UN-Guiding Principle on Business and Human Rights.

Information collected through monitoring and fact findings also forms the basis of our reports, research papers, fact sheets, policy briefs, and other publications, which provide an overview of the current situation of business and human rights concerns, disseminating vital information and driving dialogue and engagement and action toward improving business and human rights agenda on a broader scale within local communities, Corporates and three organs of the states.

Research

Research is one of the BHRT’s key programs, seeking to ensure the availability of data and information to support evidence-based advocacy initiatives. The main objective of the BHRT’s research program is to document and conduct research on business and human rights issues and violations to generate evidenced data and information to support the advocacy function.

The Research program oversees the gathering of data internally and externally, the analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of the findings of the research projects. Key deliverables under this program include the Business and Human Rights and other publications, which would become leading references on the human rights situation in Tanzania. Through this program, BHRT collaborates with partners and like-minded organizations at the national and international levels to undertake research activities.

Advocacy

Advocacy is at the heart of the organization's activities. BHRT advocates for legal and policy reforms in government to enhance accountability and alignment with human rights standards. Also, BHRT advocates for corporate responsibility to respect human rights. Furthermore, the Advocacy unit disseminates the key findings of the analysis to the relevant stakeholders such as local communities, corporate entities, and the three state organs (Government, Parliament, and the Judiciary).

With a dedicated team of professionals, BHRTs communicates advocacy messages and priorities to the corporate/business sectors and government with consideration to the political, socioeconomic, and cultural dynamics by using a gender-responsive approach.

Consumer Protection

This also is among the core objective of the BHRT activities, to promote and protect consumers from unfair and misleading market conduct, and provide for other related matters. Business and Human Rights Tanzania plays a crucial role in safeguarding the well-being and interests of consumers through education, mobilization, and representation.

Consumer protection ensures that consumers make well-informed decisions about their choices and have access to effective redress mechanisms. It also pushes for businesses to guarantee the quality of the products and services they offer. Therefore, BHRT ensured that the government put in place adequate policies, laws, and regulations to ensure that consumers are protected from harmful business practices.
