Business and Human Rights Tanzania (BHRT) is a Tanzanian, non-governmental organization that is a private, non-partisan, and not-for-profit sharing organization registered in Tanzania under the NGO (Act), 2002 with registration No. 008358. It has been in operation since January 2016.
BHRT stands out as a unique NGO dedicated to monitoring and addressing issues on business and human rights legal jurisprudence in Tanzania.
BHRT envisages a human rights sensitivity business and economic benefits in Tanzania and is on mission to empower business enterprises, government, judiciary, legislature, and academia to reinforce BHR related principles in their operations; to raise awareness and build competency of local communities in demanding legal redress; empower community in natural resource areas to understand international human rights and business principle, standards; and, influence corporate entities to observe BHR standards.
BHRT endeavors to establish links among stakeholders in the corporate sector, communities where businesses are located, employees within these companies, law enforcement agencies, legislators, and decision-makers at both local and national government levels. These links should be designed to promote and achieve sustainable development that upholds human rights, particularly in the realms of BHR, such as environmental justice, safeguarding rights, supporting small-scale producers and traders (SMEs) predominantly operating in the informal sector, land rights, labor standards, gender equality, sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, and ensuring accountability in the mining, gas, and oil industries through data-driven advocacy, in-depth research, and engaging key stakeholders in a participatory manner.
